Our children and adolescents receive comprehensive care for cancer and severe blood disorders by the Center for Childhood Diseases at the University Hospital Heidelberg. This includes not only drug therapy, but also stem cell and bone marrow transplantation, as well as powerful and modern radiotherapy, and pediatric surgery.
When transplanting bone marrow or blood stem cells, we work in close collaboration with our colleagues at the medical clinic. Special examinations required for diagnosis and treatment are carried out by experienced employees of the hematological and molecular genetic laboratory.
Another focal point of the Clinical KiTZ Program is the treatment of children and adolescents with non-malignant blood disorders. These include anemia, blood clotting disorders and immune deficiencies.
Our active participation in a Germany-wide and international network of children's hospitals ensures that the best possible treatment strategy is followed for all patients. In addition, we can access the unique treatment facility in Germany for heavy ion and proton therapy at the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center (Kinder-HIT). The departments of pediatric radiology, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, radiotherapy, pediatric urology, as well as the other departments of the hospital are closely connected. This allows us to use all the local facilities in order to ensure the comprehensive care of our patients. It goes without saying that we work in cooperation with the local children's hospitals, and established colleagues, as well as with contacts to the schools, training companies, and health insurance companies.
In addition to doctors and pediatric nurses, our team also includes social workers, teachers, educators, and music therapists. Furthermore, there are a number of volunteers who take care of our small patients.
