- The "Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg" (short: KiTZ) is a joint institution of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and the Heidelberg University (UniHD).
- It is a combined center for therapy and research for oncological and hematological diseases of children and adolescents
- At the KiTZ promising research approaches are closely connected to patient care.
- The KiTZ offers comprehensive care for its young patients - from diagnosis and aftercare to psychosocial support and schooling
- Many young KiTZ patients participate in clinical trials at the KiTZ Clinical Trial Unit (ZIPO), allowing them treatment with novel therapy options
- Three KiTZ programs guarantee close interaction between research and clinical application
- Program I: Clinical Pediatric Oncology (director: Prof. A. Kulozik, PhD)
- Program II: Translational Pediatric Oncology (director: Prof. O. Witt)
- Program III: Preclinical Pediatric Oncology (director: Prof. S. Pfister)
- Research and patient care will be combined under the roof of the new KiTZ building which is currently being planned.
- Place of the new building: In the "Neuenheimer Feld" in Heidelberg, between the children's hospital and the NCT.
- The Dietmar Hopp Foundation supports the project with a sum of 20 million euros. Other sponsors have pledged their support.
- KiTZ members: approx. 250 scientists, doctors, nursing staff, psychologists, educators, technicians, and other personnel from DKFZ and Heidelberg University hospital.
- Number of beds: 24 beds planned for the new building, additionally: day and outpatient clinic.
