Modern cancer diagnostics for all children

Worldwide, about 40 percent of all children and adolescents with cancer die from their disease. Accurate cancer diagnostics and access to appropriate therapies could significantly improve the success of treatment. The team of the Molecular Neurpoathology Outreach Consortium is at the forefront of revolutionizing diagnostics of CNS tumor and sarcoma through methylation-based classification - a method we innovated that now informs WHO diagnostic standards. The mission of the Consortium is to facilitate the global uptake of this technology, particularly in low-to-middle-income countries where cost and access of and to modern cancer diagnostics for children and young adults pose significant barriers.

Furthermore, the team also intends to fill significant biological knowledge gaps regarding populations from the global South. As most research data in pediatric oncology, as well as in many other medical fields, concerns mostly a white minority, the analyses of data concerning other populations, might provide new insights and eventually achieve essential treatment adjustments or improvements.
