For some carefree time
Our MEDI mentorship create a special bond between young patients and medical students at KiTZ, fostering friendships that benefit both sides.
At KiTZ, medical students from Heidelberg University Hospital are trained to become doctors. An important part of this training is learning how to interact sensitively with sick children and their families—an experience that is only possible with the support and trust of our patients and their parents.
One special course offered at KiTZ is the MEDI mentoring program: in the pediatric oncology ward, dedicated medical students give children with cancer something that is often lacking in everyday hospital life—carefree moments, joy, and variety.
As MEDI mentors, they accompany a child for months during intensive therapy—with games, crafts, conversations, or simply shared moments. They do not perform any medical or nursing tasks, but simply bring a bit of normality to everyday hospital life.
The volunteer project was founded in Tübingen in 2022 and is now continuing to grow in Heidelberg. Here, it is firmly established as a course offered by Heidelberg University's Faculty of Medicine, offering students the opportunity to combine social engagement with medical experience in pediatric oncology.
